The Reverend Daniel Power Memorial Scholarship was established by the Mu Alpha Chapter of Alpha Phi Omega National Service Fraternity in memory of our advisor and Brother, Rev. Daniel E. Power, S.J. The Power scholarship is an award made annually with preference in selection to needy Juniors and Seniors whose records display the values of community service, leadership, and scholarship held dear by Fr. Power in his own life.

The scholarship is open to returning Georgetown students in financial need.  The complete application package is due Monday, April 27 by 5pm to APO's mailbox in the CSJ office.  Two winners will be selected, $1,000 each.  The money will be transferred directly into the students' accounts by Financial Services.

Father Daniel E. Power was a man whose greatness touched many lives. He combined the qualities of being Jesuit, educator, administrator, broadcasting pioneer, and friend to all who knew him. His deeds are a reflection of his confidence in the potential for individual achievement.

Father Power came to Georgetown University in 1937 as a professor of history and government. Except for the three years he spent as an Army chaplain in World War Two, he dedicated his life as a Jesuit to the University and the Washington, D.C. community. He served as Director of Public Relations for Georgetown from 1956 until his retirement in 1972. He was co-founder of WETA-TV in Washington. Thousands of listeners were comforted by his Sunday masses on the radio. For twenty-six years he was the program director of the Georgetown University Forum, an educational series broadcast throughout the nation. His concern for students is exemplified by his years as moderator (advisor) of Alpha Phi Omega, the National Service Fraternity, and other campus organizations.

Father Power saw education as the never ending discovery of truth and the building of virtuous character. For that is what education consists of: fundamental noble values, worthy of anyone’s best effort. He saw them embodied in Georgetown University, whose mission is the development of leaders. That mission gave meaning to Father Power’s active life.

With this in mind, Alpha Phi Omega assembled a group of Father Power’s friends, associates, and admirers to establish and direct the Reverend Daniel E. Power, S.J. Memorial Scholarship Endowment. Students in need are selected to receive this perpetual scholarship based on the degree to which they have displayed Father Power’s high standards in scholastic achievement, leadership, and service in their communities. This memorial provides for the continuation of Father Power’s work in the community he served at the university he loved.
